Dean Hewitt
Beverly was the fourth child born to William A. and Artine (Deistler)
Inslee on a cold night, -22 degrees so I'm told. This is the same farm
where my Father was born three miles east and one-fourth mile north of
Isabel. I received lots of attention, having an older sister and two
brothers and my Grandmother Emma Inslee living there. Less than two years
later a sister joined us. The following years leave me many memories of a
very wholesome life.
I attended 12 years of school in Isabel, graduating in 1951. I took
part in all activities, enjoying music both in school and church. Some of
my learning experiences were in 4-H, belonging to Ashton until Social Plains
4-H was organized, realizing now that 4-H leaders are people with lots of
patience and understanding.
Dean Hewitt came to Isabel in May 1951 as depot agent. He was born
April 19, 1926 at Crisfield in Harper County to Gillman and Lillian (McKinney)
Hewitt. He had a younger sister, Shirley; attended Alfalfa Valley country
school southwest of Attica. After Gillman's death in 1936 the family moved
from the farm to Hazelton, where he finished school, graduating in 1944. He
also has a half-sister, Mildred. He went to work for the Santa Fe and worked
several places before settling in Isabel. We were married at the Inslee family
home on January 12, 1952. We have two children, Dennis and Gay; both attended
Isabel school. Dennis in the last graduating class in 1970, and Gay attending
11 years, graduating at Medicine Lodge in 1971.
We have been active in the community and city. Dean served on the City
Council for 26 years, helped coach little league baseball, was 4-H project
leader, and is Secretary of IOOF Lodge. He worked for the Santa Fe for 39 years
before retiring, and now has a small-engine repair shop at our home. Since
1965 I have been employed at the Isabel State Bank and an now Cashier. I also
serve as Church organist, Treasurer of the Isabel Cemetery Board, Secretary
of the Isabel Community Store Board, belong to Friendly Neighbors Club,
Grandview Rebekah Lodge secretary. We are members of the Isabel United
Methodist Church.
We have a cabin at 99 Springs Resort and enjoy spending our leisure time
there. We have many pleasant memories here, enjoying the quiet life, our many
friends and are happy to call Isabel home.
