Gertrude Norine Ellis Hill
I was born March 15, 1918, the seventh child of eight, six girls and
two boys. All are living today except Dale, Roy and Mildred. My parents
were Elnora and Ernest Ellis.
Isabel was my home from 1918 to 1936. My parents were active in
community affairs. Dad was a carpenter and also ran a grocery store. My
mother was always helping the neighbors and feeding the people who rode in
on the freight trains. Both were active in the Lodges. The Methodist Church
was important in our family.
My younger sister and I were known as the "little Ellis girls," who
sang at many functions in Isabel. We were also pep club cheerleaders for the
basketball team. I went through the grades and graduated from high school at
Isabel in 1936.
In 1936 I came to Wichita and attended Cosmetology School. I worked my
profession some eighteen years.
In 1940 I married Leonard Hill, son of Mabel and Ivan Hill both of
Kansas. Leonard's early years were in show business. He was a professional
acrobat and performed in New York City and many other places. After we were
married he worked for Beech Aircraft for forty years. During this time he
became a pilot.
We had two boys, Kenny of Wichita and Ronny of Atlanta, Georgia. Kenny
married Judy Alcorn, they have two children, Scotty and Kim. Kim's married
and has a son Matthew. Matthew is our great-grandson. Kenney is a professional
engineer and works for Poe and Associates here in Wichita. Ronney lives in
Atlanta, Georgia, he does some architectural drafting and is the musical one
of the family.
My husband and I are retired. In the last few years Leonard has helped a
lot of boys and girls with their diving and swimming. I enjoy oil painting,
reading, church work and friends. We both audit classes at Wichita State
University and swim at the Heskit Center.
Elnora and Ernest Ellis are buried in the Isabel Cemetery.
