Harry Hiskett
Charles Hiskett was born February 7, 1838 and was a Civil War Veteran.
He married Sarah A. Wood (born November 20, 1844) on November 7, 1865 after
the Civil War ended in April. They came to Missouri by covered wagon traveling
in the same group with Luther White who also settled later in Kansas. The
Hiskett family were: Harry E., Frank, Anna Evelyn, Ralph Roy, and Guy Vernon.
Harry Edwin Hiskett married Josephine Bruce in November 2, 1899 in
Chillicothe, Missouri. Frank never married and died of tuberculosis. Anna
married George Lynch January 1, 1900. Anna and George with their three
children Guy, Clarence and Clyde moved to Kansas in the spring of 1907 and
settled near Isabel. Ralph married Mary Shiply in Missouri and he and Guy
bought a farm near Harry. Guy married Emma Jane Banks July 29, 1920. They
had three children: Garland, Velma and Vernon.
Josephine was born in Hasville, Missouri January 27, 1878 to Vincent
Carpenter Bruce and Margaret Virginia Hays. There were 9 children in the
Bruce family. However, Edna never married and lived in Harry and Josephine's
home part time.], as did Robert or Bob. Corintha Croy taught school at Ashton
and Social Plains after her husband's death. She also took care of Josephine
after she became blind five years before her death on January 31, 1969.
Harry taught school in Missouri for ten years, also did some farming.
Lester White of Isabel told him about the deep soil in Kansas, its dry
climate and abundance of sunshine. Since Harry was having health problems,
they decided to come to Kansas. In 1902 he came to Isabel and purchased
240 acres from Lester White. He moved his wife and baby, Irene, in February
1903. Harry took a load of lumber out from Isabel and guided by the north
star, laid stakes on the location of the house. They built two rooms. The
Chickaska River bank mad a protection for the stock.
Irene married Harry Dyarman. She now lives in Fresno. Beulah married
Alar Mawdsley. Bruce married Edith Hiskett in 1927. Ruth married Roy Thornton
February 2, 1936. She died April 28, 1974. Virginia Lee married Maxon Strohl on
December 2, 1938. They live in Fresno, California.
