Leo House
Leo House, the son of Benn and Emma House, was born near Isabel, Kansas
and attended the Crooked Creek School. Thelma Parkey and Dorothy Ellis were
two of his teachers.
Fern Rolf was the daughter of Ed and Amy Rolf and was also born in the
Isabel vicinity. Fern attended Ashton School until she lost her father in a
harvest accident in June 1925. In 1926 her mother and her siblings moved to
a farm one-half mile south of Isabel. Leo and Fern attended Isabel High School
and graduated in the same class in 1932.
Leo and Fern were married in July 1933 in Sawyer by D.B. Bennett, the
Christian Church minister. They moved to the farm taht Fern's parents had
come to in November 1911 soon after their marriage. Leo engaged in farming
and raising livestock. Married during the depression, even the monthly
grocery bill of $11 to $13 was hard to pay from the receipts of cream and
eggs.
Leo and Fern's children were Carolyn, now Mrs. Jim Armstrong, and Edgar
who died in January 1978 from cancer at the age of 41. His son, Tyson, lives
with his mother on a farm west of Isabel. The other grandchildren are Bret
Armstrong and Staci Armstrong Jacobs.
Leo served on the Isabel Farmers' Coop board for 21 years and was a
member of the Ashton School board. Fern is a 50-year member of the Ashton
EHU Club, the Stitch and Chatter Club and the Sew and So Club. She was
instrumental in getting the History of the Ashton Community (1906-1986)
printed.
Leo retired from farming in 1980 because of ill health, turning his
farming operation to his son-in-law Jim and grandson Bret.
Leo and Fern celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1983 with a
reception in the Family Life Center of the Medicine Lodge Christian Church
where they are members. They are still on the farm that has been their home
for 53 years.
