Rhoderick Hunt
Elizabeth and Rhoderick Hunt and their daughter, Amber, came to Isabel
from Keokuk, Iowa, about 1900. Also coming with them was Thomas Doran, Mrs.
Hunt's father and her sister Aimee Doran, who later married Tom Knight, an
earlier Isabel resident. (Tom operated a blacksmith shop and was living in
the territory before the town of Isabel was laid out.)
Mr. and Mrs. Hunt were known to most who knew them as Uncle Rhody and
Aunt Lizzi. "Rhody" was a cabinet maker and carpenter who operated his
business from the lumber yard in Isabel. "Aunt Lizzie" was an excellent
seamstress and sewed for many of the people around the area. She not only
made dresses and other apparel, but tailored coats and suits. Mrs. Hunt was
Sunday School Superintendent at the Isabel Methodist Church for many years,
and her sister Aimee Knight taught Sunday School classes for years.
Amber Hunt attended and graduated from high school in Medicine Lodge
since there was no high school in Isabel at that time. She was taken to
Medicine Lodge on Monday mornings by horse and buggy and remained in town
until Friday.
The Hunt home was built by "Uncle Rhody" and the family lived there
until his death in 1940. Later the home was sold and then torn down. A gas
well was drilled and still exists where their garden and chicken yard had
been.
