Terry Carter & LaVeda (Helmke) Carter
LaVeda Marie Helmke was born August 7, 1947, at Nashville, Kansas, the
eldest of four children born to Dietrick and Elenor (Westerman) Helmke.
LaVeda was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church and attended
grades 1-7 at St. John's Elementary School. She attended eighth grade at
Zenda Grade School and attended Zenda High School, graduating in 1965. She
attended St. John's College in Winfield and received her Associate in Arts
degree in 1967.
Following graduation, LaVeda moved to Los Angeles, California, to accept
a position in the Southern California Lutheran District Office where she
worked until 1978. At that time she accepted a position with Christ College
Irving where she currently works as Director of Foundation Relations.
On August 18, 1979, LaVeda married Terry James Carter of South Laguna,
California. Terry was born in Pasadena, California, May 4, 1945, son of
John and Evelyn Carter, Terry was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran
in Pasadena and attended elementary school at First Lutheran. He attended
Pasadena City College and the University of Oregon in Eugene. Terry served
in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and then returned to graduate school at the
University of Oregon where he received his Masters Degree in History. Terry
has served as Professor of History at Christ College Irvine and as Principal
of Southeast Lutheran High School in South Gate. He is currently a reference
librarian with the County of San Bernardino and City of Ontario.
LaVeda and Terry live in Riverside, California, and are active members of
Gethsemane Lutheran Church.
