Alvin Herman Dicke & Elizabeth Caroline (Helmke) Dicke
Alvin Herman William Dicke was born Dec. 13, 1919, on the farm where he
presently resides. (See Fred Dicke for famly history.) Alvin attended St.
John's Parochial school for seven years and one year at Nashville grade. He
was confirmed in 1934.
Elizabeth Caroling (Helmke) Dicke was born November 10, 1921, on a farm
three and one-half miles north of Pratt, Kansas. (See Fred Helmke for
family history.) She attended St. Paul's Lutheran Parochial School in
Natrona, Kansas, for four years, Harrel School in the country for four
years and Pratt High School for two years. The family moved to Zenda in
1937 so she graduated from Zenda High School in 1939. She was confirmed
at Natrona in 1935. She worked for the post office one year.
Elizabeth and Alvin met through the Walther League at St. John's and
were married August 24, 1941. They lived on a farm one and one-half miles
north of Nashville then spent four years in Nashville before moving to the
home place in 1952. Four acres of the southeast corner of the place is the
township cemetery.
They bought the farm in 1969 from the estate. The original house of two
rooms has been added to and remodeled several times. The barn was rebuilt
in 1939 after a tornado blew it down.
In 1985 Alvin semi-retired and farmed just the home place. Elizabeth
worked for Strong's Insurance Company from October 1956 until December 1986.
Both have been active in the church. Alvin has serve on the parochial
school board and on the finanacial board, as Sunday School superintendent
and as financial secretary. He sang in the choir and is a past LLL member;
he is presently on the cemetery board. Elizabeth first played the organ
for church when she was 16, but she would not play for the once a month
German servicees because she said she could not play in German. The first
organ she played was a manually pumped organ, converted to electric; it
was hard to play. In addition to playing the organ, Elizabeth taught
Sunday School for many years, held offices in the Ladies Aid and Dorcas,
sang in the choir and did typing for several parochial school teachers.
She presently plays for Presbyterian Church services and has done this
for about four years.
They have two children. Marlyn Ray, born in 1945, married Lana Munch
and they live in Nixa, Missouri. Mary Ann Elizabeth Dicke Kerr was born
in 1947, married Wayne Kerr and they live in Wichita, Kansas. The Kerrs
have one daughter, Susan Isbell, Wichita, four stepsons and four step-
grandchildren.
Alvin's hobbies are welding lawn ornaments and wood-working. Elizabeth's
hobbies are music, writing, sewing and raising flowers.
I think an interesting custom that I had not heard of until coming here
to Nashville was the custom when Alvin was born of using the name of the
child's sponsors as the child's middle name. Herman Lampe and William Hensiek
were Alvin's sponsors.
