Leonard Fredrick Kahmeyer & Velma Emelia Marie (Knuth) Kahmeyer
Leonard, the youngest of eight children born to Mary (Nunnenkamp) and
Ernest Kahmeyer, lived in the Nashville area all his life. He was baptized
in the Lutheran faith at birth and confirmed in 1928 by the Rev. P.G. Krause.
He attended the Nashville schools.
Leonard worked at many jobs around Nashville including helping Uncle Fred
Knuth with his trucking business and Walt Kahmeyer with the service station.
He helped with almost every harvest at General Mills. For many years prior
to his death, Leonard was custodian and bus driver for the Nashville schools.
Activities in the church included helping continue the tradition of the
church bell tolling.
Velma was the older of two daughters born to Johannah (Bether) and Louis
G. Knuth. Baptized at birth in the Lutheran faith at Nashville, she was
confirmed by the Rev. P.G. Kruase in 1931. She attended the schools in
Nashville. Velma lived briefly in Optimo, New Mexico and Aliceville, Kansas,
eventually returning with the family to Nashville.
In addition to being a housewife and mother, Velma worked as a switchboard
operator for the phone company and a cook at the hospital while helping
Leonard with his duties as custodian for St. John's Church and School. Velma
was blessed with a good strong voice and enjoyed singing.
Leonard and Velma were married February 14, 1933, in Kingman, Kansas. Four
children were born into this marriage; three survive. They are Lyle, 1937,
Arveda, Colorado; Lannis, 1948, Hutchinson, Kansas; and Victoria Goetz, 1949,
Kingman, Kansas. All the children wre baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran
Church and attended school in Nashville.
After Leonard's death, Velma lived briefly in Kingman before moving to
Hutchinson in early 1973 to work for Cessna. In December 1973, she married
Percy (Dick) Lamb, who was originally from the Oregon area. In 1980, Velma
retired from Cessna but continued to work out of her home. She remained
active in the church and enjoyed life with Dick until his death in 1986.
In April 1992, Velma was diagnosed as having an inoperable brain tumor.
Because of deteriorating health, she now resides at Kingman Manor L.C. where
her sister Velta (Pat) Ross and daughter Vicki help to make her remaining
time as confortable as possible.
In spite of all that is happening, Mom is still able to give and receive
love.
