Walter John Henry Kahmeyer & Lavina Fredareka (Engelhardt) Kahmeyer Shoffner
Walter John Henry Kahmeyer, was born August 30, 1905, near Hampton, Nebraska,
was one of eight children of Ernest and Mary (Nunnenkamp) Kahmeyer and grandson
of the Rev. Friedrick Kahmeyer, who was pastor in Lutheran Churches in Central
Minnesota starting in 1857. The Ernest Kahmeyer family moved from Nebraska to
Marion County, Kansas, and in 1913, to Kingman County southwest of Nashville,
becoming members of St. John's.
Walter attended German and public schools and was confirmed March 28, 1920.
He was past elder and organist of the church, a member of Walther League and
LLL. He enjoyed baseball. In 1931, Walter was a bulk agent for Williams Oil
and later owned a service station. He was also treasurer for the city for 29
years. He passed away June 27, 1972, and is at rest in St. John's Cemetery.
Lavina Fredareka, born March 6, 1915, near Ellinwood, Kansas, was one of
three children of Edd and Fredareka (Reka)(Lanterman) Engelhardt. The family
moved one mile south of Nashville in 1921 because the parents wanted to be
nearer to the Lutheran Church and school. Lavina was confirmed April 1, 1928,
by the Rev. Krause. She was a member of Walther League, Dorcas Society and
Ladies Aid.
Walter and Lavina were married February 4, 1934, by the Rev. Hilst in St.
Paul's near Preston. They lived in Nashville. They are the parents of one son,
Wayne Walter, born November 26, 1934. Wayne now lives in Littleton, Colorado.
Wayne was confirmed Arpil 25, 1948, in St. John's by the Rev. Schroeder of
Pratt, the vacancy pastor. He now belongs to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran
Church, Littleton, Colorado.
October 24, 1982, Lavina married Virgil Shoffner of Wakita, Oklahoma. He is
a retired farmer. They live in Medford, Oklahoma. Lavina is a charter member
of First Lutheran Church of Pond Creek. She enjoys her son Wayne and his wife
Kathi, the grandchildren, Warren Kahmeyer of Wichita; David and Sheri Kahmeyer
of Weatherford, Oklahoma; Debbie and Lance Elliott of Stillwater, Oklahoma;
Amie Kahmeyer of Littleton, Colorado and two great-grandsons, Zachary and
Matthew Elliott.
"Echoes from the past": I miss the ringing of the church beckoning us to
worship Jesus Christ our Savior.
