Julius James Lawrence & Eva Margaret (Heublein) Lawrence
Julius James Lawrence came to the United States with his parents and
brothers and sisters in 1876 from Logoweiss, Lauenburg, Germany, and
landed in New York. From there they came to Junction City and Hope,
Kansas. He was born April 16, 1860. His parents were Ludwig Louis Lawrenz
and Dorothea Gustke. J.J. died June 4, 1939.
He married Eva Margaret Heublein on July 4, 1884. Eva was born July 18,
1864, in Neuhauss, Saxony, Germany. She came to the United States in 1883.
She had one brother, Michael, who also came to the United States. She came
to Hope, Kansas. She died July 27, 1946.
Eva had two cousins who were married to J.J.'s brothers and this is how
they met. J.J. and Eva were married a few days after they met; they lived
together for more than fifty years. They moved to Liberty Township, Kingman
County, in 1913 and lived on a farm one mile north of Nashville. J.J. had a
real estate business.
Their first car was a Maytag Mason. Eva often remarked that life was hard
here, but much harder in Germany. In Germany, they would pick up feathers
that ducks and geese had lost. The feathers were used for feather beds and
pillows. Cattle were kept in barns beside or under the house.
J.J. and Eva attended the Lutheran Church, seldom missing services. The
men sat on the right side and the women sat on the left side of the church.
Eva always sat on the left side, second row, next to the center ailse. J.J.
always had lemon drops in his pocket for his grandchildren.
During World War I, 1917, when there was much ill feeling toward the
German immigrandts, J.J. had the spelling of his name changed from "Lawrenz"
to "Lawrence." All the children under eighteen years had the spelling
changed to "Lawrence." Those older were left with the spelling of "Lawrenz."
William, Fred and Henry did not have the name spelling changed.
J.J. and Eva's children and their spouses were Rose (Ernest) Poppe, Clara
(Fred) Knuth, Frieda (Alvin) Schmidt, William (died at 19), Fred (Mary Corbin),
Henry (Ella Morisse), John (Greeta Schiff), Edward (Agnes Shinliver), and
Albert (Millie Davis), One died as an infant.
