John W. Owen & Emma (Kuehn) Owen
Emma (Kuehn) Owen was born in Nashville, Kansas, May 12, 1891, the daughter
of Jacob and Christine Kuehn. She was baptized in their home by the Rev. H.
Vop of Winfield, Kansas, who was a circuit minister who tried to reach young
Lutheran settlements several times a year.
St. John's Lutheran Church had its beginning in her parents' home. The
church was first organized July 22, 1893.
Emma was confirmed in the German language catechism at Haven, Kansas, by
the Rev. J.G.F. Klinehans, March 24, 1907, while staying with an older
sister.
Emma married John W. Owen January 3, 1916 at Cherokee, Oklahoma.
Their three sons were all born at Nashville, Kansas. C. LaVerne was born
March 10, 1917; LaRue W. was born June 18, 1919; and Benjamine L. was born
December 24, 1923.
At this early time German service was held every Sunday. It was very
difficult for two little boys to sit for one hour and a half during the
service. Occasionally when the congregation would stand, we would slide
the song books back and forth on the pew seats. You can guess what happened
when we got home.
Emma passed away March 20, 1977, at Wichita, Kansas.
John W. passed away November 11, 1973, at Wichita, Kansas.
They made their home at Nashville, Kansas, all but the last five years
when they lived at Attica, Kansas.
