Ernest William Poppe & Rosa Eva (Lawrence) Poppe

Ernest Poppe was born January 12, 1883, at Bremen, Kansas, son of Henry
and Joan (Breneke) Poppe. Rosa Lawrence was born June 23, 1886, daughter
of Julius Lawrence and Eva (Heublein) Lawrence. They were both baptized
and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. Their parents all came from Germany.
Later in life, both families moved to LIncolnville, Kansas, where Ernest
and Rosa met and were married February 16, 1906. They decided to move on
a farm at Leoti, Kansas. Their son Wilbert was born here July 13, 1907.
Crops being so poor, they decided to move back to Lincolnville on a farm
three miles north of town; Lenora was born there January 17, 1909.
They soon realized the need for a larger home, so they bought a nice home
two miles east of Lincolnville. On March 12, 1912, Victor was born and Nelma
appeared on the scene January 19, 1914. Then on April 12, 1916, Glenn came.
The Lawrence family moved to Nashville, Kansas, and Ernest and Rosa were
urged to move there; they moved in 1919. They bought a home two miles north
west of town. While they wre here, Virgil was born August 25, 1925, and, in
a couple of years, Gerald came on the scene August 28, 1928. Gerald was a
sick child and he passed away February 25, 1930.
Ernest and Rosa retired from the farm in 1938. They were fifty-five and
fifty-three years old. They bought a nice home on the south end of Main
Street in Nashville. In 1941, they bought the DeWeese home, which made them
a nicer home. Ernest maintained the roads and plowed many gardens for people.
Rosa was ailing for some time and we took her to the Halstead Hospital for
examination; they found that she had a large growth on her liver. She was too
weak to have surgery, so she asked to be taken back to the Nashville Hospital.
She remained there until her death January 29, 1954, at the age of sixty-eight.
Ernest continued to live at the home for seventeen years. Age was telling
on him and he had to go to the Kingman hospital and the Pennick Rest Home.
He passed away November 28, 1971, at the age of eighty-eight.
Wilbert married Dorothy Lampe and they live in Cimarron, Kansas.
Lenora married Marion Alexander. He passed away June 4, 1985, and she
married Elmer Brooks. He passed away March 18, 1988. She lives in Hutchinson.
Victor married Gay Unger. He passed away June 18, 1970. She lives in
   Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Nelma married Lawrence Lampe; he passed away July 7, 1968. She lives in
   Nashville, Kansas.
Glenn married Evelyn Deeble. He passed away while he was in the Navy on
   February 19, 1956.
Virgil never married. We believe that he was lost at sea.
All children were baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church.
