John Steffen & Anna (Harms) Steffen
Fred and Sophia Steffen came from Germany in 1884, settling in Newton,
Kansas. They had four sons, Herman, William, Henry and John, and one
daughter, Emma. In 1905, the family moved to a farm northwest of Cunningham.
They became members of St. John's at Nashville because it was the closest
Lutheran Church.
John (1895-1942) married Anna Harms (1897-1986) in Newton in 1917. They
had six children: Velma (1918-1990), Elmer (1920-1982), Florence (1923),
Helen (1925), Edwin (1927), and Dorothy (1930). All of the children were
baptized and confirmed at St. John's.
Velma married Robert Wilson in 1937. They had four children and lived
most of their lives in Connecticut.
Elmer married Peggy Cooley in 1946. They lived in Cunningham and Pratt
and had two daughters.
Florence married Francis Low in 1942. They had three sons and are now
living in Mullinville, Kansas.
Helen married Don Link in 1946. They have seven children and now live
in Slidell, Louisiana.
Ed married Mona Wilcox in 1947. They have four living children. A daughter
born in 1954 died, having lived only four days. Ed and Mona have lived in
the Cunningham area all their lives.
Dorothey married Clair McElwain in 1948. They have four children and have
always lived near Mullinville, Kansas.
Anna died in 1986 at age 89, having lived in the same home in Cunningham
since 1917. She remained active in the church until her death. All the
children were baptized and confirmed at St. John's.
