William John Winter & Elizabeth (Bargfrede) Winter
William and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Winter arrived in Nashville, Kansas, on
January 16, 1910. They moved to Nashville from Sweet Springs, Missouri,
where they were married June 7, 1900. Five of their children were born
in Missouri and four were born at Nashville, nine in all.
The Winters' arrival day created quite a stir in the small town of
Nashville. They arrived about 4 p.m. on a train, accompanied by four
other families with ten children and all their belongings, which included
furniture, clothes, horses, wagons, farm machinery, cattle and dogs.
The four other families were Ernest and Anna Klaustermeyer, Henry Flentje
Sr. and family, Ed Kraemer and the William (Bill) Schmidts. The William
Hensiek family had moved here earlier and were good friends and they helped
them by meeting them at the train and helping them care for their stock.
Bill and Lizzie lived on the "Ridge" on Lizzie's mother's farm (the
Bargfrede farm), south and west of Nashville. They lived there until 1943-
1944 when they moved to Nashville. They were members of St. John's Lutheran.
Their children were Selma (Kernohan), Herman, Walter, William Jr., Esther
(Crocker), Henry, Hulda (Lampe), Margaret (Welty), and Alvin. Four of them
are still living; Henry, Esther, Hulda and Alvin.
Henry and Esther are members of Trinity of Medicine Lodge. Hulda of St.
John's of Nashville and Alvin of Holy Cross of Wichita; all are Lutheran
churches.
