Raymond W. Breese
Raymond (Ray) Breese was born September 17, 1902 at Leonardville, Kansas,
the son of Edna Hood and Matthew Breese. In November of 1927, Ray was married
to Josephine Fleming of Abraham, Missouri who was the mother of four sons -
Harry, Eddie, George and Marion - and one daughter, Margie. Josephine was born
July 17, 1893. They moved to Woodbine in 1928 and lived on the Gillett ranch.
The children attended school in Woodbine. They moved to the farm owned by Milton
Oesterreich where Ray cleared a large portion of the timber, cutting and selling
wood and they had a large garden. While Ray worked at other jobs, Josephine and
George and Margie took care of the garden which produced an abundance of tomatoes
which they sold to most of the stores in Herington. Marion, the youngest son
spent the entire summer of 1933 in a Wichita hospital undergoing a series of
surgeries on both hands. In 1935, they moved to Herington where Ray was made
assistant manager of the Farmers Elevator. Josephine passed away August 20, 1940.
In 1942 Ray was called into the Air Corps.
On September 2, 1943, Ray married Ruth Weber of Dillon. Ruth's birthday
was July 17, 1911. Her parents were Margaret Heer and Henry Weber of Burns,
Kansas. She passed away March 18, 1976. They moved to Dillon in 1943 and Ray
was manager of the elevator and Ruth was the bookkeeper until 1946 when they
moved back to Herington. Since then Ray has been self-employed as a carpenter.
Harry passed away in 1973. Eddie lives in Wichita, George is in Post Falls,
Idaho, Marion lives in Indianapolis, Indiana and Margie Reeder lives in Solomon,
Kansas.
