Herman Brehm
Herman Brehm (January 31, 1888-June 24, 1968) was born on the "Miller
Farm: in Union Township. He married Emma Gunter (October 8, 1891-November 1,
1973) on January 22, 1913. They moved to the new four-room house Herman had
built on their farmstead N1/2 of N1/2 of Section 31. It was here they raised
their family of six children: Lovene (June 30, 1914) married Harold Gugler;
Catherine (November 10, 1916-February 9, 1965 buried in Independence) married
Wayne Reed now in Casper, Wyoming; Rose Marie (August 17, 1918) married Howard
Stephens, accountant in Riverside, California; Merle (December 26, 1922 -
December 19, 1979 buried at Woodbine) married Darlene Reed; Pauline (October
10, 1924) married Ray Boyer, retired Air Force Colonel, Riverside, California;
and Jenice (May 24, 1927) married Melvin Winters, superintendent of school in
Olathe.
Herman had three older brothers so it was his job to herd the livedstock
on the open range. He grew up to hate horses so it was no surprise that in
September 1914 he purchased the first tractor in the community, a Bull tractor
with 12-horsepower and pulled 2-16" plows. He was also among the first to own
a combine. Since the family farm was along a major road, electricity came in
1918. Milk cows and chickens provided much of the food, groceries, and
clothing for the growing children and they all learned to work.
The children attended school at Walnut Grove #78 and Woodbine High School.
The family was much involved in 4-H, school and the Methodist Church. Herman
and Emma retired in 1948 and moved to a comfortable home in Herington. Both
are buried at Woodbine. Merle stayed on the farm and his son, Russel, along
with Pat and Hans now live on the farm.
