Carl F. & Kathrina Brenner
Karl F. Brenner left Zwickau, Saxony, Germany in 1865, and came to
Fosterburg, Illinois. Kathrina E. Stilkenboom, daughter of Udea Stilkenboom
Fecht (Mts. Jellie B. Fecht) came with her farmily from Hanover, Germany, in
1866, to Illinois.
Karl F. Brenner and Kathrina E. Stilkenboom were married November 8, 1868
at Walshville, Illinois. A daughter, Theda, was born in 1870.
In 1871 thye moved to Dickinson County, Kansas, northwest of Hope, along
Turkey Creek, where they lived for a time in a dugout. Children Louis, Caroline,
Otto and Alvin were born here.
In 1879 the Brenners moved to a farm six miles northeast of Woodbine. Here
William, Edward, Albert, Hulda and Clara were born. The children attended the
Lyona School until in 1900 when the family moved to the farm two miles south.
The children then attended the new Pleasant Valley School.
Karl was a wagon maker by trade but spent his lifetime farming. He was a
musician, having played in a family brass sextet when a young man in Germany as
well as the violin.
Karl and Kathrina were members of and attended the Upper Lyons Creek German
Baptist Church two miles south of Woodbine. Karl conducted choirs in the area
accompanying the singers with his violin. This church disbanded about 1901.
In 1881 Karl and Kathrina helped organize the Lower Lyons Creek German
Baptist Church north of Lyona, later known as the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The
first building was erected in 1882, the second building in 1916. Karl served
many years as Sunday school superintendent. Mr. and Mrs. Brenner lived on the
farm until their deaths in 1920.
