Henry Fengel
Henry Fengel, born in Germany on July 25, 1832, came to America in 1843.
He settled near Burlington, Iowa. In 1850 he traveled to California in search
of gold. It took three months to make the trip. He stayed only a short time
and returned to Iowa by way of New Orleans, landing back in Iowa in April 1851.
On March 6, 1862 he married Mary Ann Lee who was born May 1, 1836. In
1866 they left Iowa with three of their children; George, Annie, and Charles.
He found land that he wanted about a mile northeast of Woodbine, moving his
family to their new home in April 1867. They had three children born in Kansas;
Julius, Jessie and Emma.
The Fengel's farmed until 1907 when they retired from the farm and moved
to Woodbine to make their home. Mr. Fengel died June 28, 1915.
A son, Charles Fengel, had the hardware store in Woodbine. He married
Pearl Westrup on June 22, 1904.
