Gatch
In May 1859, Henry Gatch and wife joined a small group at Watertown,
Wisconsin and headed for the Lyon Creek settlement in Kansas. Using covered
wagons pulled by oxen, they arrived ten weeks later in August at the house
of William Staatz. He decided to pre-empt land on Carry Creek three and one-
half miles west of Woodbine where Clarence and Doris Gatch lived.
In 1865 he enlisted in the Civil War and he died there. They had three
children: Louise, Otellia and Henry. Henry was born January 19, 1865. In
January 1905 he married Amelia Brehm. They continued to farm the land his
father had homesteaded. Their four children were: Florence, Clarence, Ceola
and Dewain.
Florence married Ervin Aebi and they live on a farm near Enterprise.
Their two daughers are Kathaleen and Sandra. Calrence married Doris Rusch
and they lived on the original homestead. Their daughter is Nancy. Clarence
died March 7, 1986. Ceola married Joe Whitehair and they lived on a farm in
the Hope community and two children were born to this union, Steve and Dianne.
Dewain married Katharine Lueker and they live near Woodbine on the former
George Mitsch farm. Their two children are Connie and Tracy.
