James Allen Gillett, Sr.
James Allen Gillett came to woodbine from Woodbine, Illinois in 1869. He
was born in 1829 and died May 24, 1890. They were English people and therefore
provided the land for the English Methodist Church built in 1888. His wife
Margaret Jane Gillett was born in 1835 and died in 1904.
On coming to Woodbine they bought land from Nimrod Ridley who bought the
land in 1862. Ridley had acquired the land as bounty for service during the
Civil War.
The city of Woodbine was founded by James Allen Gillett on July 16, 1887.
He named it Woodbine after his former hometown of Woodbine, Illinois.
In about 1876 he built a water powered grist mill on Lyon's Creek. The
farmers could bring in their grain to be ground. The mill burned in 1892 and
was not rebuilt. The Gillett ranch consisted of many acres and they fed
thousands of cattle.
Mr. Gillett was also postmaster when the post office was in the hardware
store of Joe W. Gillett, his son. He helped to dig the first dug well in
Woodbine which was directly in front of the hardware store.
The first telephone was from the switchboard in the hardware store to the
A.A. and G.G. Gillett residences.
Mr. and Mrs. Gillett had five children: Joe W. Gillett, his wife was Mary
Pierce Gillett; James A. Gillett whose wife was Emma Hazel Gillett; Mary Emma
Gillett married James Reed; Lydia Ann Gillett married W.H. Hollinger of the
Chapman community; Grant G. Gillett whose wife was Amanda E. Gillett.
