Wesley Herren
Wesley Herren moved to Woodbine with his parents, Charles Edgar, "Ed" and
Flora Ann, "Flo" Herren from Navarre, Kansas in 1921. Ed Herren came to take
over management of the Woodbine Telephone Company. The telephone office was
located across east of the railroad depot. They lived in the two extra rooms
of the telephone office.
There was a disaster during their time in the telephone office. A fire
broke out in the gorcery store just south of the telephone office. Since it
joined the grocery store with no fire wall it all burned, nothing was saved.
All telephone service to Woodbine was cut off. The United Telephone Company at
Abilene rushed a switchboard and installation forces to install service. It was
only a few days until Woodbine again had telephone service from the jail building.
The Herrens had to find a new place to live until the telephone building could be
rebuilt and moved into.
Wesley graduated from Woodb ine High School in 1925. In the fall his parents
moved to Manhattan so he could continue his education. He graduated from Kansas
State University in 1930. He married Ethel Schwendener, the girl he met in
Woodbine.
Wesley worked for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Kansas City,
Missouri, Little Rock, ARkansas, and Topeka, Kansas. Wesley retired in 1966.
