Charles Hiebert
Charles W. Hiebert, the only son of Peter and Teresa Gunter Hiebert,
was born January 27, 18890 on the farm near Woodbine. His parents died in
1901, leaving him and five sisters: Anna Aebi, Hannah Humfeld, Matilda Huff,
Rebecca Peterson, and Selma Woods to be cared for by relatives.
At the age of fourteen "Charley" came to Woodbine to live with James
Reddys and attend school. He also lived with Frank Shippys. He worked for
Sam Muenzenmayer. In 1912 Charley and E.L. Shank purchased the general store
from Sam Muenzenmayer and operated it. Mr. Shank retired and Charley sold the
store to Wayne Reed in 1948.
On October 8, 1919 Charley married Ella Volkman. Their home was the
present Verland Middleton home. Ella was born May 20, 1896, the daughter of
Rinehart and Mary Hill Volkman.
Charles passed away on September 17, 1954. Following the death of Charley,
Ella had a smaller home built that is now occupied by Ron Rollers. In 1982
Ella moved to Friendly Acres in Newton.
