August and Sophia Kandt
August Kandt, son of Gottfried and Wilhamina Kandt, was born March 16,
1859 and died May 16, 1943. He came to America from Germany in 1866 at age
seven. He came with his parents, a brother, William, and sisters, Caroline
(Mrs. Louis Houserman), Wilhamina (Mrs. William Volkman), and Mary (Mrs.
George Traskowsky). A married sister, Ernestine (Mrs. Gottlieb Schimming),
came to America later.
The family arrived in Atchison on July 4, 1866, and there was a cele-
bration going on. August, being small, didn't know what it was all about
and was sure it was the Indians he had been warned about before he left
Germany. He clasped his head for fear that he would be scalped.
John Kandt, brother of Gottfried Kandt, met them to bring them to their
permanent home. Their home place was where Victor Kandt lived until his
death. Dennis Albrecht now lives on this farm three and one-half miles south
of Woodbine.
August Kandt married Sophia Lueker on April 12, 1883. She was born May
6, 1864 and died January 8, 1930. They were the parents of Fred, Louis, Marie
(Mrs. George Gebhardt), Anna (Mrs. H.W. Noyes), Martin, Victor, and Gilbert.
Victor was the only child who attended school in Woodbine. He played baseball
with the Woodbine team.
