William E. Kind
As a small child, William E. (Bill) Kind came with his parents and
brothers Richard and Ernest to Woodbine, by train, in the spring of 1906.
The Edward Kind family had come from Poland to the United States in 1903.
Bill was born June 7, 1904 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Bill's father
died November 1906. His mother, Caroline, raised her sons by doing all
kinds of house and farm work for the neighbors. She was finally able to
buy the Aebi place, seven miles northeast of Woodbine. The boys also
worked as soon as they were old enough.
Bill eventually took up the profession of wall papering and painting,
taking the name of "Modern Kind Decorating." He painted many buildings,
including churches, stores and homes in Woodbine and throughout a 30 mile
radius. A lot of his grained woodwork is still in use.
Bill and Wilma Gridley of Clay Center, Kansas were married in 1932.
They built a home near his mother, where they still live. They are the
parents of William J. and Lois-Ann.
After painting for nearly 50 years, Bill retired in 1970. This gave
him a chance to pursue his hobby of music. Bill, with his accordian, guitars,
musical saw and electronic Shovel, presents his "Kind Gospel Country Music"
wherever he is invited.
