Charles H. Koepke
Charles H. Koepke was born at Petersdorf, near Templin, Bretenberg,
Germany on NOvember 8, 1855.
He came to America with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl F. Koepke,
in 1860, settling in Wabaunsee County. In 1866 the Koepkes moved to the
Shady Brook community in Dickinson County.
He received his education in the common schools of the area and in
Lawrence, Kansas for two years.
On December 20, 1877 he married Minnie Kandt, daughter of John and
Mary Kandt. Minnie was born in Lyon Township, Dickinson County, January
30, 1860.
They had seven children: Henry, Lena, Charles J., Rudolph, George,
Werner, and Walter, who died in his youth.
In the fall of 1890, Mr. Koepke was elected county commissioner
from the first district. He was also township trustee, justice of the
peace and deacon of the Lutheran Church. He was a staunch Republican.
They moved to Woodbine in 1904. He served on the city council.
He built the garage, now fire station, in 1916. He sold Ford cars.
Prices in 1917: Ford Runabout $345; Touring car $360; Couplet $505; Town
car $595; and Sedan $645.
Mrs. Koepke was the second white child born in Dickinson County. She
died September 5, 1948. Mr. Koepke died March 16, 1927.
