John Martinitz Family
John Martinitz was born in 1844 in Unterhausen, Germany. He came to the
United States and settled in Cleveland, Ohio.
In 1867 he married Mary Feyer who also came from Unterhausen. She had
come to the United States to care for her brother, Herman Feyer, who had
lost a leg in the Civil War. Their children, Mary, John H., and Rosa, were
born while living at Cleveland.
In 1875 they purchased a farm, sight unseen, and brought their family,
including Uncle Herman Feyer, to Kansas on the train. The farm was two miles
west and two miles south of Woodbine. Here Eliza and Sara were born.
Mary married Christian Brickei. They had nine children. John H. married
Bertha Hoffman. They had five children. Rosa married Joe Wuthnow. Eliza
married Charles Roehrman. They had eight children. Sara married Paul Hofman,
brother of Bertha. They had one child.
John and Mary later moved to Herington, where he died in 1911. Mary died
in 1917.
John and Bertha Martinitz lived on a farm in the Lyona Community. Their
children were: Norton who married Pearl Schmidt, their children were Dale
and Jeanine; Laura; Gilbert who married Leota Timm (see their story); Viola
who married Tom Presley, they had one son James; and Amye who married Herbert
Darling.
Bertha died in 1934 and John died in 1939.
