G. Verland Middleton Family
Verland and Waneda E. Schlesener Middleton have lived in this community most
of their lives, the exception being a few years in Herington and during World War
II service.
Their children are: Elizabeth Anne Hur, Bellvue, Washington; Eleanor Mae
Browning, Emporia, Kansas; Martha Jane Dybwad, Allenton, Pennsylvania; and George
V. Middleton, Herington, Kansas. They have seven grandchildren.
Verland and Waneda grew up in rural Woodbine, attending the Woodbine school
(Waneda attended the Shady Brook Grade School). Their grandparents came to this
area in the 1860's and '70's. At least one of their ancestors fought in the
Revolutionary War.
Waneda and their two oldest children moved to Woodbine into the Emma Timm
house while Verland was serving in the Army during World War II. After the war,
they moved to the Milton Aebi house. Next they moved to the Middleton homestead
southwest of Woodbine. In 1956 they purchased the Charles and Ella Hiebert house,
where they still reside.
Verland has worked at his Woodbine business since 1947.
Waneda obtained her LP Nursing license in 1968. She has been employed by the
Geary Co. and Herington hospitals and at the Lutheran Home in Herington. She is
now retired.
