Herman Mitsch 1855-1915
Herman and his sister, Emma (Mrs. Sam Gugler), came to Kansas from Peoria,
Illinois in June, 1877. He settled on a claim near Woodbine where Dewain and
Katherine Gatch are living.
On August 1, 181, he married Phoebe Jane Gugler, daughter of Jacob and
Elizabeth Weber Gugler. On October 4, of the same year Herman's sister, Emma,
married, Samuel H. Gugler, a brother of Phoebe Jane. Herman and Phoebe Jane
lived on their farm until 1904 when they moved into Woodbine. They lived across
the street south of the present Lutheran Church. The house was a large beautiful
home later occupied by the William Johnson family. In later years the house
burned to the ground but the land is still farmed by Ronald Johnson, William's
grandson.
Herman Mitsch was a well known farmer and businessman. The obituary states
"he was one of Dickinson County's most substantial citizen's." He helped organize
the Woodbine State Bank in 1902 and was the bank president at the time of his
death in December 21, 1915.
Their children were: George, 1882-1967; Charles, 1885-1945; William Herman
1887-1954; Esther (Mrs. Paul Knuth), 1889-1959; Alice (Mrs. Art Volkman), 1891-1974;
Eliza (Mrs. Merle Palmer), Abliene, 1893; and Ollivette (Mrs. Robert Paulus), Santa
Paula, California, 1900.
Phoebe Jane died April 1, 1942.
Several of the children were employed at the Woodbine State Bank as was a
nephew, Milton C. Gugler. All of the family had outstanding musical talents.
For years the Mitsch sisters-Esther, Alice, and Eliza, were in demand as a
vocal trio. Eliza is a talented musician who can still play almost anything from
memory whenever she is asked. In 1985 she played many hymns for the Mitsch-Gugler
reunion song fest held following the noon meal.
