George Mitsch Family
George Mitsch was the first child born to Herman and Jane (Gugler) Mitsch
who lived in Woodbine on a farm. George married Eleanor Middleton June 6, 1906
and their first home was in an apartment above the bank where he worked. Their
first child, Grant, was born there May 19, 1907. From there they moved to a
house in town which was later the home of George's sister, Alice and her husband.
Here their second child, Homer, was born January 19, 1911. Due to George's
health, the family moved to the farm where George was born as were their next
five children.
In 1925 the family moved to Oregon as George did not care for farming and
was interested in growing fruits and berries. The family settled near Brownsville,
Oregon where they had almost an experiment farm with many varieties of fruit.
Their youngest child, John, was born December 14, 1927.
Six of the children are now retires. Grant, who married Amy Ross, was a
hybridizer of daffodils and has over 400 varities registered with the Royal
Horticultural Society of England. His wife died in 1982. Their two daughters
have taken over the business, one full time with her husband. Homer married
Nancy Calhoun and he was a shipping clerk for a plywood plant; Nathan, born July
24, 1912, married Mary Elles Averill and spent much of his life as a contractor
Lois, born November 15, 1913 had a career mostly in accounting, still works and
travels; Mary, born March 29, 1915, married Walter Ross, a logger; Ruth, born
December 27, 1918, married Alfred Calhoun, who was a maintenance superintendent
for a school; Martha, born December 1924, married Dwight Cannon, who is
production superintendent for a hardboard plant; and John, the youngest, married
Geraldine Hess, PhD and has been in the wholesale nursery business for forty
years. Both Grant and John have shipped their products all over the United States
and some foreign countries.
Goerge and Eleanor Mitsch were both devout Christians. All of their children
and most of their fourteen grandchildren are active in the churches of their
choice. Eleanor Mitsch died May 17, 1962 and George died about five years later
in January 1967.
