Encie Elizabeth Picking
Encie Picking taught at other schools in all directions in the county. In 1945
she began teaching in the Enterprise School and taught there until retiring from
teaching in May 1957, at which time she moved back home to Albilene and lived with
her older sisters, Miriam and Lelia Picking. Encie is the last of the Picking school
teachers left. She has reaced the age of 94 years, and is active in church and other
"organizations" in Abilene. She remembers most of the "children" she taught throughout
Dickinson County, many of whom she has out-lived.
It seems as I (Marilyn Knopp) came to Woodbine foloowing marriage. My aunts had
set the stage many years before. Aunt Myrtle Picking taught Wayne's mother, Aunt
Miriam Picking taught at Woodbine and knew many of the family, and Aunt Encie Picking
taught at Union #18 south of town the year Wayne graduated from high school.
My sister Elaine Martsolf married Dale Hettenbach who is related to Wayne through
the Westrups.
