Wayne Reed
Wayne Reed started working fro Shank and Hiebert Grocery when he was discharged
from the service. Bothy Shank and Hiebert were still in the store when he began
working in 1946. Chirley Hiebert bought out Mr. Shank and Wayne then worked for Charley
Hiebert.
Wayne remembers Lou Shank showing him how to candle eggs in the back room of the
store.
Wayne bought the store from Hiebert and borrowed money to put in a locker plant.
Wayne cut meat at night and worked in the store during the day. He then hired Warren
Hettenbach away from the Abilene A&P to cut ;meat and butcher for the locker. When
Mr. Hiebert sold to Wayne he went to work in the bank for Roy Johnson.
Wayne had the store about ten years and then sold it to Bob Krause. Wayne then
worked for Fleming Company in Topeka. In 1958 he went into another store in Independence.
Wayne was married to Catherine Brehm. She had also worked for Shank and Hiebert.
Catherine has passed away. Wayne and Catherine had two children. Larry lives in
Huntington Beach, California and Dorita is in Houston, Texas.
Wayne is now in Casper, Wyoming working fo the Rocky Mountain Food Dealers
Association as Wyoming Division Manager.
