Jacob Riffel was the son of John and Katherine Riffel. He was born April 30, 1878
in Hope, Kansas and died November 12, 1954. He was married to Ollie Longhofer, daughter
of Fred and Mary Longhofer. Ollie was born on September 4, 1885, near Woodbine, Kansas,
and died December 19, 1941. Nine children were born to Jacob and Ollie: Esther, Jonathan,
Ruth, Solomon, Rhiney, Susie, Thomas, Lavina and Emery. Thomas passed away on December
  3, 1928, Jonathan on February 8, 1979, and Susie on January 25, 1978.
Shortly after their marriage Jacob and Ollie settled on a farm three miles west
and one-half mile north of Woodbine. After living there eight years the home was
destroyed by fire, but a new home was soon under construction with the help of kind
and caring neighbors. It was a replica of the Charley Hiebert home in Woodbine which was
an eight room home. Jacob was a prosperous, hard-working farmer all of his life. He and
his wife Ollie made a wonderful couple. He was a member of the school board and treasurer
for a number of years of Walnut Grove School District #78. Except for Thomas, who died
at age 13, all of their children attended the school to the eighth and ninth grades.
The farm was sold to son Jonathan after Jacob retired and went to live with his
children in turn. Then, in 1985, the home that left so many precious memories in out
hearts and minds was also destroyed by fire.
