Otto Rohloff
Otto Rohloff remembers the good old days, when you worked hard for fifty
cents a day from sunup to sundown.
He started to work to help build the double track between Herington and
Latimer for 79 cents per hour.
He met his sweetheart, Luella Shrader, at this time. It was love at first
sight. This was in 1922 and they were married in 1924 at Sterling, Colorado.
Luella worked as a cook for room and board and Otto got a job for Burlinton
Railroad for 79 cents per hour.
They came back to Kansas in 1925. It was just too cold in Colorado under-
neath a freight car. They rented a farm near Latimer, Kansas. Times were tough
on the farm, storms took his crops, too much rain or not enough. They quit
farming.
In 1929 they moved to Woodbine and bought a small house from Jim Bryan for
$300, plus one acre of land. The house needed a lot of work and his father,
being a good carpenter, helped him fix it to live in.
Otto and Luella had three children: Merle, Daryl, and Glenda.
In 1947 the family moved to California and returned in 1974 and now live
in Herington.
Otto shared many memories of his story and would like to include it all
but space is limited.
