Elmer Lewis Shank
Elmer Lewis (Lou) Shank was born May 31, 1870 and died February 7, 1956.
He was married to Lillie Blume. She was born January 6, 1882 at Latimer and
died January 11, 1977.
In the early 1890's E.L. Shank came to Woodbine from Navarre with Dan
Horton. He bacame owner of his own grocery store with Charles Hiebert about
1914. In the early days Mr. Shank operated a horse drawn peddler wagon out
of the store. He would canvas the entire community almost as far as Enterprise
and Junction City. He bought eggs, sold graceries and dry goods, and gave
candy to the children, winning the friendship of many of them. He continued
in this business until he retired, selling his interest to Mr. Hiebert.
Mr. and Mrs. Shank had two sons who both helped in their father's store.
Norwood married Laura Diekmann and Herbert married Avis Jenkins. Both boys
attended the Woodbine Schools.
