Art and Alice Volkman
Arthur William Volkman was born in Woodbine May 25, 1894, son of Rinehardt and Mary
(Hill) Volkman. He attended Woodbine schools and went to business school in Chapman. He
went to Colorado where he help build a railroad near Steamboat Sprints, worked on
Vegetable farms and worked at Brown's Hotel in Denver. He joined the Colorado National
Guard in 1913 and the Kansas National Guard in 1916. He served in France during World
War I and received his discharge in 1919. He managed the Robinson Elevator in Woodbine,
was a hog buyer for Cudahy and Morrell and also farmed.
Art ;married Alice Mitsch on October 3, 1920. Alice was born i 1891, the daughter
of Herman and pheobe Jane (Gugler) Mitsch. Alice worked in her father's bank, attended
Woodbine schools and Liberty Ladies College in Liberty, Missouri. Alice was a member of
the Mitsch Sisters Trio and was very active in the Methodist Church. Alice died October
4, 1974.
Their children are: Robert, born November 15, 1921, married Agnes McDonald February
14, 1948. They have five children and live south of Woodbine. Jack, born March 20, 1923,
married Annabelle Olson. They have five children. Jack died October 11, 1972. Mary Jane,
born November 5, 1924, married John W. Hall of White City and has three chldren. Roselyn,
born April 30, 1927, married Adair Farres. They had five children. Adair died in 1966.
Roselyn lives in Woodbine.
