Martin Volkman
Martin Volkman was born January 21, 1798 in Prussia. He married Dorthea (maiden name
unknown) who was born January 15, 1805, in Pommern, Germany.
They came to the United States in 1857. They first settled in Wisconsin, then came
to Kansas in 1858 to a point three miles northeast of Woodbine. Here they built a log cabin
for a home. This log cabin has been donated to the Dickinson County Historical Society and
moved to Abilene.
There were plenty of Indians around the Volkmans during the late 50's and the 60's,
but most of them were friendly. One of the volkman sons lost his way one day while on a
buffalo hunt and stumbled into an Indian camp. The Indians kept him overnight and the next
morning went part of the way with him in order to direct him back to his home.
