On your webpage,
Margaret Edwards is listed as the teacher of Prospect School,
closed in the 1950's. She was indeed that, and is my mother. She is still active, living in El Dorado, Kansas, and her email address is peedledee@southwind.net. She taught not only at prospect but at several other schools in Kansas, including one room schools. Following is a summary of her teaching career. Margaret Edwards - Teacher During the course
of her teaching career, Margaret Edwards taught many hundreds
of lucky kids. She remembered most of them, and they her. Many of them have come to visit her years after she retired, appreciative adults remembering their early school experiences. Her early teaching assignments were one room schools with wood burning
stoves and outhouses. Many mornings after walking to school she started the day by building a fire and carrying water before the students arrived. Teaching then was hard physical work, but she has fond memories of those years and can tell many stories about her students. She taught not only from books, but by providing experiences for her students
as
well. She once took 25 first graders on an overnight camping trip, teaching them the joys of setting up camp, building a fire, sleeping in the outdoors, and waking to a breakfast cooked over an open fire. She first had to convince the school superintendent she was capable of caring for 25 first graders in the outdoors overnight. Not one parent refused to allow his or her child to attend, knowing it was Mrs. Edwards who would be taking them. Through her talents and hard work, many children learned the three R's in
a loving environment. Her teaching skills also were applied in the Christian church, where she for many years led youth organizations and summer church camps. Margaret's teaching profession has changed the lives of many children in
many
ways. For all the children who grew up better and stronger because you were their teacher, thank you Margaret Edwards. Margaret Edwards' Teaching Record:
