The Kansas Heritage Server would like to thank Jane Slaughter (slaughter62@msn.com) for contributing this information.
I was looking through your list of old Kansas schools and did not see one that I have a photograph of. It was called "String Town School" and was in or very close to the small town of Stilwell, Aubry Twp., Johnson County, Kansas. It was an old white frame school which appeared to be a one room school house, very similar in looks of the pictures you have on the Kansas website. My Grandmother and her siblings attended this school in 1880's - 1890's. It has since been torn down, sometime after the 1950's or 1960's. I don't have any other information about the school. I have two photo's to send and both have my daddy, Lloyd Noble, standing there. It was his mother Myrtle Moon Noble who attended this school. I wish they had taken a better photo of the whole school building.
This is the other photo of Old String Town School. I do not know why it was called that. It would be interesting to find out. My dad's mother grew up in Stilwell, Aubry Twp., Johnson Co. KS. None of my living relatives know where the name came from. I was told by a cousin who lives in Leawood, KS that the school was torn down. If you find out any other information about the school, please let me know as I'm working on a family history of the "Moon's". My GG-Grandfather and Gr-Grandfather and families all farmed and lived in Stilwell. My Gr-Grandfather William Mark Moon had a hardware store and a farm in Stilwell. Maybe someone who sees the photo will provide more information. Saturday, May 17, 2003 8:55 PM |
