Unknown -- Allen County

The Kansas Heritage Server would like to thank Jerry Oyler (oylers@earthlink.net) for contributing this information.

I attended a one room school south east of Humboldt in 1952 and 1953. There were about 15 to 20 students from the 1st grade through the 8th. We lived about 3/4 of a mile from the school. Jack and Norma Daniels were our neighbors across the road. They had 3 children, Dale, Gary and Judy. Dale and Gary still live in Allen county the last I heard. My older sister Nancy and a younger brother David also attended the school. I was in the last half of the 3rd grade and all of the 4th grade. We rented a farm from Troy Beach who lived in Humboldt and was the father of Norma Daniels. The farm was an old one and has since been destroyed by fire. There was no running water and the toilet facilities were all outdoors. The seats were the type that were made of cast iron legs, wooden seats and tops with the top that lifted to store books and supplies under it. It had a single pot belly stove for heat. The oldest student attending at the time was 16 and was in the 8th grade as I recall.

I don't remember the name of the school, but it had been there for quite some time. It wasn't long after we left that Allen county consolidated the schools and closed it down. The teacher was a single women in her late 20's I think. I wish I could remember her name. If you find any information on the school I would be interested in hearing from you. I am currently in the process of writing an autobiography and would like the information.

If you look at the map of Humboldt on Mapquest, and follow the tank farm road east until it crosses US 169 and becomes Delaware road. Turn south on 1600th street until you come to Colorado street. This is the road we lived on. The farm was about midway between 1600th and 1800th streets. The school was located on 1800th street just a short distance from Colorado street and 1800th street intersection. I am sure the building has since been torn down or relocated.
